Congratulations AdventHealth Kansas City! Enjoy the journey. It’s hard to believe AdventHealth Apopka Florida opened over 2 years ago. AdventHealth WinterGarden, Florida is next in 2022. Exciting times. Becoming part of the communities we serve and having excellent healthcare available close to home is so rewarding!

Growing up, Ellen Acinger thought she would pursue interior design, her mom convinced her to give nursing school a shot and she’s felt at home since then. Acinger shared that her mother saw something in her that Ellen didn’t see, but to this day shares that her mother was always right. After 25 years of witnessing miracles come into the world every day, Acinger still is inspired by her work and the work of other leaders. Acinger shared “My team and our patient population are my why. They amaze me every day and it makes me beyond proud to be a leader on this unit.” However, coworkers and fellow leaders at AdventHealth describe her as hardworking, genuine, dedicated, compassionate and the true inspiration on the unit. It is her personality, compassion towards our tiny humans, patients and team members that have led her to be named AdventHealth Shawnee Mission’s 2023 Leader of the Year.

Its officially summer! Strawberry Festival is here! Our South Overland Park and Shawnee Mission campuses hosted our team members and their families for our annual celebration of the summer fruit. There were bouncy houses, inflatable ax throwing, and of course, strawberry treats. Thank you to all the individuals who helped put this event together and to our team members who helped us celebrate. We will see you all next year!

We're proud to support the Pharmacy of Grace in their mission to help uninsured and underinsured individuals afford their medication every month on a long-term basis. Earlier this week, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission donated $35,000 to Pharmacy of Grace which will allow them to support patients’ need to have consistent access to life-saving medications that they might not otherwise be able to afford. When you ask our team to describe Brenda, you inevitably hear her described as a faith-led, mission oriented, others focused leader and they will use adjectives like caring, compassionate and empathetic to describe the way she interacts with every member of our team. They will also say she knows everyone. Not just their name, but she knows their stories – the joys and the challenges. Brenda has been vital to the growth of South Overland Park since opening in 2021. She had the vision to partner with area high schools and implement a career exploration program for students. Brenda leads our team member engagement, inclusion and recognition process and has been active in team member recruitment and retention, but she doesn’t stop there. She helped implement the AdventHealth South Overland Wellness program and led our holiday Shoebox Gifts for Refugees in the Kansas City community, resulting in over 400 shoebox gifts for children in 2023. Brenda exemplifies servant leadership and makes everyone she touches feel valued and appreciated. Congratulations to Human Resources Manager, Brenda Quinlan, on being named AdventHealth South Overland Park leader of the year.

Living by the life motto, "be the reason someone smiles today," Sheryl Hayton finds herself demonstrating love and going beyond to make patients feel heard and understood. Coworkers shared that her ability to infuse love into her role has not only enhanced patient experiences but has set a gold standard of compassion that resonated throughout our entire healthcare community. Hayton shared, “Anytime I get to hold someone hand, say a prayer with them or listen gives me purpose in life. This goes beyond our patients but to the community and my coworkers. I strive to be the safe space anyone can come to.” AdventHealth is proud to share that Sheryl has been successful with her motto of bringing a smile to people's faces. This has led her to be named an AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Outstanding Team Member. Sheryl shared, “Receiving this award has humbled me because it gives me strength, motivation and validation that I have and will continue to make a difference in people's lives.”

Medical Surgical Nurse, Anitha Jesudasan, was the recipient of the 2023 Christian Mission Award at AdventHealth South Overland Park. One of Anitha’s team members describes her as the “most genuinely kind nurse I have ever worked with.” Anitha devoted her life to serving others after the Seventh-day Adventist Church visited her home country of India and taught her about Christianity. Today, Anitha uses her day off to lead voluntarily prayer for intentions every Friday in the South Overland Park Chapel at noon. Prayers are submitted from patients and team members in person or via the prayer boxes on campus and all are welcome to attend. Patients describe Anitha as patient, attentive, comforting and respectful. We are blessed to have someone who exemplifies the AdventHealth mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ on our team. Thank you, Anitha, for living out our mission and service standards every day.
