Too bad you've never had the original. The bread for a banh mi sandwich is one of the most important elements, made with rice flour and has a fantastic crunch to fresh/soft ratio that's so important. The bread and the pickled vegetables and the mayonnaise spread are the stars, to me. I can take or leave the pork. I am just as happy with a vegetarian version.

Banh mi sloppy joes! Absolutely killer. If you make the pickles the night before (and you should, they’ll be better,) this becomes a 15 minute dump-and-stir weeknight miracle. If your ground pork looks fatty, definitely fry it off and drain it when it’s 90% cooked through. Use Thai basil if you can find it, the little leaves will wilt into the pork, no chiffonade needed. Light, chewy rolls are best. Lots of cilantro. Got any kewpie mayo? You know what to do!

Joyce

I made it vegetarian: soy protein fake meat and homemade vegetarian "fish" sauce were all the changes. It was wonderful!

Nam Le

I'm Viet. Tbh I never like my banh mi with liver pate. A lot of good banh mi stores here also do not serve pate.

Julia

It looks like a Banh Mi, it tastes like a Banh Mi....is it authentic?! Who cares. Made this for Friday night supper and ate them with cold beer. Totally delicious. I cheated and used a bag of shredded carrots and radish from the grocery store. Doubled the pickling mixture. One way to make this extra super decadent delicious is a smear of butter on the top of the roll before eating. Then eat and ascend to nirvana.

Katherine

Delicious indeed! I used the shredding blade of my food processor for the pickled vegetables, and the result was both flavorful and manageable as part of the sandwich.

Alan C Brownmd

A very good sandwich. I cut the amount of sriracha in half and it was at the limit of our spiciness tolerance. I also crisped it in our sandwich press before adding the vegetables and we loved the crunch of the fairway baguette that resulted.

Julia

I make this with Impossible "meat" and it's delicious.

This is one of my favorite NYT recipes. Buy good rolls - it matters. We leave out the mayo component and just buy siracha mayo from the store to add on top. Pickle the veggies the morning before you cook - makes a difference. Have used chicken, turkey and pork for the meat and all work equally as well.

Robin

If you go with baguette, get the softest ones you can find! I stood there for 10 minutes squeezing baguettes like I was trying to find the perfect avocado.

Jo Ann Henderson

I love SE Asian flavors and Banh Mi is one of my favorite "street foods" (though I regularly pick one up at a nearby Vietnamese deli). When I saw the recipe I realized that I keep most of those ingredients on hand, so decided to make this instead of making a deli run. This definitely worked as a quick, ready-to-make alternative on a rainy day. Flavors were spot on!

Gustus

Easy and delicious. I used leftover pulled pork (unsauced), chopped and cooked only a couple of minutes to warm it up instead of the 7-10 minutes called for when using raw ground pork. We had some leftover pitas to use up so stuffed the meat and veggies in them and liked the result. Tip: my international market labels the radish "lo bok" which I googled to confirm is the same thing as daikon.

Ed

Made tonight and it was well-received. Delicious. Advise to cut the vegetables at least 1/8 inch thick. I used a simple mandoline and the thin, thin result while tasting fine, would have been better with a little more snap. I think a wider cut would have given that snap.

Anja Speckhardt

The pickled vegetables make this sandwich. They also get better overnight. I used regular french bread and they worked just fine. Delicious!

COhome

This time we tried ground turkey for a lighter version... delish!

Ana

Made the pickled veggies - very good

e-kale

This is very tasty and fairly easy to make. We made this with Trader Joe's baguette, defrosted in the oven, and that worked well. The meat really did conjure up the pate/meat combo taste of a Banh Mi. A big hit in this household.

Brian C

Do not substitute ground pork with pork sausage! This turned out way too salty when I did that, otherwise a really nice sandwhich!

debbie dillon

Use 2x wine at least

E.

Portuguese rolls toasted lightly on outside are pretty good for these. For the pickle I add sliced jalapeño

Kirsten

I felt weird about mixing the mayo with the pork so just spread it on the baguette, that was tasty too!

David Yohalem

Daikon radish is not available where I live. Any suggestions for substitutes would be appreciated. Same question for lemon grass.

Liz

Jicama is great in this

Family loved

I liked these a lot! I made them once before but with some leftover pork. They were good, but this time I made them and followed the recipe - great! The comment about a banh mi sloppy joe is spot on. I found some soft yeasty torpedo rolls at my grocery store bakery, and while not authentic, they worked pretty great! I will make this again. It made for easy banh mi!

Hwizard4

Very good! I opted to use the mayo as a spread rather than combing with pork in order to optimize leftovers. Will make again.

nadia

This recipe is amazing! Makes great bento lunches too! I just toned down the spicyness for the kids and they loved it!!

Jordan

Tried it with tofu instead of pork - just a great Monday night dinner.

Kristin

Really enjoyed! I'm a wimp and only put 1T of sriracha into the mayo and glad I did! Any more I would not have been able to eat it. I didn't add any chili to the meat while cooking. My only criticism is the pickled veg is really sweet. Next time I'll half the sugar. I also like more vinegar. More balanced sweet and tart. I agree with draining the pork. I actually drained mine halfway through the cook to help get a more crispy brown on one side.

Kitfo

I love this recipe - it’s a family staple. I always double it.

Rebecca

Made with ground turkey as that's what we had on hand and it was absolutely delicious.
