The new(ish) 5 watt "Bubba" radios that Cabela's puts out. I had a fairly new pair of 4 watters, but had to have the 5's. Won't have to think about upgradin' now.......the FCC won't allow anymore than 5 watts in those radios.

As for a review....they reached my buddies quite clearly cross canyon and a few miles on top and far away to assist me in getting my bull out this last season.

When compared to some 3 and 4 watters in camp....they seem to be worth the few extra $'s.....IMHO.

Oh yeah....the 180 TSX and my 300WSM were both new....worked great.

Cabelas modular wall tent, worked good as a cook and meeting area but in really windy and snowy weather, snow got in thru the corners. Other wise it held up good.
Davis 14x16 wall tent out of Denver,Co. Great winter tent, held up in the worst possible conditions. Our sleeping tent.
Big Buddy portable propane heater, came close to throwing it against a tree and beating it with a log. It fails to mention in the instructions or on the box that it doesn't work above 7000', only on their web site.
Montana Rifle Co. 7mmWSM, never got the chance to use it, the bull got away.

Picked up a pair of Leica 10x50 Trinovid Binos from Doug as well and love them. I was kinda worried about the higher power and viewing for longer periods but it wasn't an issue for my use.

Leupold replaced a spotting scope of mine on warranty for the new 12-40x60 HD model. Its a step up from the old one but I am not overly impressed with it at the higher magnifications. I haven't used a Swarovski or Leica spotter so I can't compare it to them.

Also picked up a Summit Goliath climbing tree stand for a whitetail hunt in Sask. Only used it for about 1/2hr before I shot my buck from it. Very comfortable and well made, just don't think they were made to climb frozen trees at -31C, its was alittle slippery at times and the stand wouldn't grab properly.

I used the new Leupold RX-IV Rangefinder. Works great, I'm very glad I purchased it over anything else.

Your the first person I have heard that was glad they purchased the new Leupold rangefinder...2 friends of mine hated theirs, 1 sold his already and the other is trying to get rid of his.

A cheap gerber gut hook for under $10 bucks worked great this year. A sling type pack back so I could still shoot without the shoulder straps getting in the way. I just upgraded to a maxpedition monsoon gearslinger. A msr pocket rocket stove was a nice treat on a very cold archery day. The 280 ai that I had built was the bomb. Deer dropped in his tracks saving me a long drag if he would have gone another 10 feet. A Gene ingram model 7 in d2 with a 5/32 inch blade, need I say more. Just some of the things that I liked this year. A summit open shot stand worked great once getting the hang (no pun) and a comfort level. Being a gear junky is tough. I spend all the time after hunting season buy more stuff.

I hunted out of my Double Bull Matrix blind for the first time. I love it. It set up quick, didn't blow away in very strong winds once I put a few stakes down. It's nice to sit in a comfortable chair and watch the deer go by.
Made my longest shot on Whitetail ever with a Kimber Montana 325 WSM, it's becoming my favorite all-weather rifle. I can't think of any game in the America's I wouldn't hunt with a 200gr TSX at 2950. It shoots pretty darn flat and whacks the snot out of stuff.
I rolled the edge over of my Helle Harding splitting the pelvis on the deer I shot with the Montana. I started to be a little dissappointed with it but thought that I probably would have rolled the edge on most knifes doing the same abuse and might have chipped the edge on a lot of them. The knife needs further study and I need to not forget my pelvis saw......................DJ

I used a Savage M114 Classic .30-'06 with a Leupold VXIII 2.5-10X40 with B&C reticle. The rifle grouped under an inch at 100 yards for 3-shots (test target in box was .4"). When you consider the price on the rifle, it really wowed me. It certainly impressed the antelope I shot with a 165 gr Nosler AccuBond. I wanted to try the reticle aiming too, but the shot came at 90 yards. Oh well, there is always this year. So what new gear did you try last year - reviews? (38)

1. pre 64 fwt bored out to 338-06 by Classic Barrel, fit into McM G&H stock with talley lever QD mounts and Leo 1.75X6E Var X III scope did the trick on Caribou at 247 yds and Yukon moose at 150 Yds. Also (2)Kifaru Spike Camp was all I needed on NWT backpack hunt. (3)BA 15 degree Summit Park bag w/REI aircore mattress were positive additions as well. I should also mention the new (4)Nosler Custom Ammo is 338-06, 225 gr Nosler Partition was a big hit in NWT. I also used Nosler Custom Ammo in 35 Whelen that worked very well. Oh, the Leki trekking stick with rifle "V" notch was superb. Left it for my guide in NWT but will get another.

Nikon Sky and Earth spotting scope and Pentax DCF SP 8x binos from Doug both worked as well as expected. So did the Sagan Saw (for sawing through the pelvic bone), that I bought locally.

Eberlestock J105 backpack

Got me off my ass and out into the hills.

Packed out 2 black bears and 1 mule deer.

Well thought out and hands free hunting a huge advantage in steep terrain.

Uncle Mikes Mountain Sling

For $15, you can throw away all the hand carved, large padded, rifle slings with your initials or eagle's heads on them. Has grip tape on the under side, which holds the rifle where it should. Lightweight as well with non-rusting swivels included.

Quality optics

Mine happen to be 10X42 Zeiss ClassiCs from the Great Wapiti and a 65mm T*FL straight spotter

Sold a few rifles to pay the bills, but worth the money. Whatever brand you choose, you cannot hunt or shoot what you cannot see. Ditch the Bushnells and Trash-cos for some decent glass.

Please God, give me some good tags this year....

I tried several new products last year.

First, I bought a CVA Optima Pro muzzleloader, with which I took two very nice deer. The land I hunted is in a shotgun/handgun/muzzleloader only zone, and I have to say I'm sick of trying to make clean killing shots at 175 yards with shotguns. The CVA is advertised as a 200-yd rifle, and by damn, it is. I used 295 gr Powerbelt bullets, which I've used before in my sidelock muzzies, but this was my first foray into the land of in-lines. I very much liked he fit and feel of the Optima Pro, and the price is unbeatable. It shoots incredibly accurate groups.

Second, I tried Jim Shockey Gold BP substitute. I bought both chunks and powder. I shot about $200 worth of Powerbelts into the dirt at my local range to find what worked, and in the end I decided that 2-shot groups under 3/4 of an inch with a muzzleloader were good enough for me. I took every one of the chunks out of the jar and weighed them, then paired them by wrapping each pair with masking tape. Each pair of chunks weighs 80 gr plus or minus about half a grain. That and the Powerbelts equals venison in the freezer.

Third, I bought my first rangefinder. I did this because early in the season I estimated the range on a deer at 200 yards, but when I paced it off afterwards, it was 275. I capitulated and bought a Leupold RX-II. It worked beautifully, and both deer I took were ranged first with this instrument, then shot exactly where I wanted the bullets to go.

I highly recommend all three of these products. I am a stingy guy, so keep that in mind as you read this. I don't like or endorse stuff that costs too much when reasonably priced stuff will get the job done.

Swarovski EL's, one in 10x42, other in 10x32. Hauled em both to Wyoming and Alberta. We are dealing with 50+ year old eyes so keep that in mind, BUT except for field of view, I could see no other differences between them. The 32's were a LOT less burdensome to carry. They are my choice in open country now; very handy and if I am leaving anything on the table, my eyes cannot see it!

LL Bean Hunters (back) Pack - cannot say enough about this pack. A great day pack during use last year, and will be using this year as a weekend hunt backpack.
http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/st...1118&shop_method=pp&feat=8884-tn

Coleman Peak stove - worked great, a little heavy, but rugged.

camo waterproof fishing gloves (for rainy days) - clammy as expected, but not as bad when wearing poly liners underneeth (spelling?)

Ruger Mark II in 264 win mag w/boat paddle stock - GREAT.
Bushnell Elite 3200 in 2x7x 32 - great scope for the $, not quite as clear as my Grand slam, but I'm a happy camper.

Mountain Hardware 2nd demension bag, haven't tried it in the field yet, but will soon enough. I hear good things.

Zeiss Conquest 8x30's - wow!

That's all I can think of currently.

NH Hunter.

Nikon LX-L refab in 8X32. As clear and sharp as my Leica 8X42. In the field, it was much easier to carry, particularly up close on a short strap. Something I can't do all day w/o significant discomfort with the 10 oz. heavier Leica.
I found that if I'm glassing alot while on my feet, the heavier 8X42 Leica works better. Less image shake and eye strain. So, I carry the 8X32 when I know I'm covering lots of ground as in tracking, and use the 8X42 Leica while still hunting.
12X50 Leica BN. This was a gamble. I wanted something that would show me the most w/o having to use a tripod. It really works. I couldn't get over how much more I could see over either my 8x's, 9X or even the base level 15X Minox. Simply a different world. It's one big drawback is that it simply can't show you much from standing. Therefore, it is not an all around glass. For the sitting glasser. I carry it in addition to the light 8X32 if conditions require it. BTW, I purposely choose the much heavier BN over the Ultravid simply for the extra weight. Helps to reduce image shake. You are right at the limit on hand held binoculars with this magnification. E

Bought a Badlands 2200 day pack. Used it on three hunts totaling about 20 days in the field. Wasn't all that impressed with it, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to pack more than about 40 pounds in/on it. The spotting scope/tripod compartments are nice, but it only has a couple pockets that are big enough to store anything, and the inside pocket is a PITA to get to. I'm pretty sure its going to the classifieds here soon.

I got a Mystery Ranch Nice frame for Christmas, and will be outfitting it with a couple diffrnet bags for future hunts.

I used a semi custom Pre-64 338-06 to kill an elk and deer this year. Worked just as I expected. So what new gear did you try last year - reviews? (69)

Bought a REI quarter dome tent, only spent 3 nights in it so far, but like it. Its light and seems pretty well made.

A new MSR Pocket Rocket stove. Works pretty well, but the pot holder 'legs' are kind of flimsy. Its not realy set up to heat much more than maybe a quart of water at the most, a pint would be better. Worked just fine for the amount I needed for cooking. It takes up next to nothing in the pack and weighs about 3 oz.

I tried a new boot called the "Mountain Extreme" by Kenetrek which is made here in Bozeman and I also worked with a pair of their new gators.

Both are absolutely wonderful!

Give em a look www.kenetrek.com and check out their products.

A couple of buds own and started the company. Hard hunting fellas and tough to find better fellas and or better hunters!
Jim the president worked with Schnees for 18 years and brought em to where they were at b4 they sold. He and my bud Bob decided to start their own it is a super company they have some very good products and these fellas truly know how to get to the hill and get er done!

Check em out

Dober,
What did you (dis)like about these boots? They look rugged but heavy, did they feel that way? Are they worth the $300?

norske,

I used the Sagan saw this year as well, in the smaller original version. I cannot believe that I used to do it any other way! Field dressing got a lot easier and less messy, all for a few dollars and a couple ounces.
