Won't have to think about upgradin' now.......the FCC won't allow anymore than 5 watts in those radios. As for a review....they reached my buddies quite clearly cross canyon and a few miles on top and far away to assist me in getting my bull out this last season. When compared to some 3 and 4 watters in camp....they seem to be worth the few extra $'s.....IMHO. Oh yeah....the 180 TSX and my 300WSM were both new....worked great. I was kinda worried about the higher power and viewing for longer periods but it wasn't an issue for my use. Leupold replaced a spotting scope of mine on warranty for the new 12-40x60 HD model. Its a step up from the old one but I am not overly impressed with it at the higher magnifications. I haven't used a Swarovski or Leica spotter so I can't compare it to them. Also picked up a Summit Goliath climbing tree stand for a whitetail hunt in Sask. Only used it for about 1/2hr before I shot my buck from it. Very comfortable and well made, just don't think they were made to climb frozen trees at -31C, its was alittle slippery at times and the stand wouldn't grab properly. A sling type pack back so I could still shoot without the shoulder straps getting in the way. I just upgraded to a maxpedition monsoon gearslinger. A msr pocket rocket stove was a nice treat on a very cold archery day. The 280 ai that I had built was the bomb. Deer dropped in his tracks saving me a long drag if he would have gone another 10 feet. A Gene ingram model 7 in d2 with a 5/32 inch blade, need I say more. Just some of the things that I liked this year. A summit open shot stand worked great once getting the hang (no pun) and a comfort level. Being a gear junky is tough. I spend all the time after hunting season buy more stuff. joes |

It set up quick, didn't blow away in very strong winds once I put a few stakes down. It's nice to sit in a comfortable chair and watch the deer go by. Remember this is all supposed to be for fun....................... |

The rifle grouped under an inch at 100 yards for 3-shots (test target in box was .4"). When you consider the price on the rifle, it really wowed me. It certainly impressed the antelope I shot with a 165 gr Nosler AccuBond. I wanted to try the reticle aiming too, but the shot came at 90 yards. Oh well, there is always this year. jim LCDR Jim Dodd, USN (Ret.) |

Also (2)Kifaru Spike Camp was all I needed on NWT backpack hunt. (3)BA 15 degree Summit Park bag w/REI aircore mattress were positive additions as well. I should also mention the new (4)Nosler Custom Ammo is 338-06, 225 gr Nosler Partition was a big hit in NWT. I also used Nosler Custom Ammo in 35 Whelen that worked very well. Oh, the Leki trekking stick with rifle "V" notch was superb. Left it for my guide in NWT but will get another. |

Well thought out and hands free hunting a huge advantage in steep terrain. Uncle Mikes Mountain Sling For $15, you can throw away all the hand carved, large padded, rifle slings with your initials or eagle's heads on them. Has grip tape on the under side, which holds the rifle where it should. Lightweight as well with non-rusting swivels included. Quality optics Mine happen to be 10X42 Zeiss ClassiCs from the Great Wapiti and a 65mm T*FL straight spotter Sold a few rifles to pay the bills, but worth the money. Whatever brand you choose, you cannot hunt or shoot what you cannot see. Ditch the Bushnells and Trash-cos for some decent glass. Please God, give me some good tags this year.... |

The land I hunted is in a shotgun/handgun/muzzleloader only zone, and I have to say I'm sick of trying to make clean killing shots at 175 yards with shotguns. The CVA is advertised as a 200-yd rifle, and by damn, it is. I used 295 gr Powerbelt bullets, which I've used before in my sidelock muzzies, but this was my first foray into the land of in-lines. I very much liked he fit and feel of the Optima Pro, and the price is unbeatable. It shoots incredibly accurate groups. Second, I tried Jim Shockey Gold BP substitute. I bought both chunks and powder. I shot about $200 worth of Powerbelts into the dirt at my local range to find what worked, and in the end I decided that 2-shot groups under 3/4 of an inch with a muzzleloader were good enough for me. I took every one of the chunks out of the jar and weighed them, then paired them by wrapping each pair with masking tape. Each pair of chunks weighs 80 gr plus or minus about half a grain. That and the Powerbelts equals venison in the freezer. Third, I bought my first rangefinder. I did this because early in the season I estimated the range on a deer at 200 yards, but when I paced it off afterwards, it was 275. I capitulated and bought a Leupold RX-II. It worked beautifully, and both deer I took were ranged first with this instrument, then shot exactly where I wanted the bullets to go. I highly recommend all three of these products. I am a stingy guy, so keep that in mind as you read this. I don't like or endorse stuff that costs too much when reasonably priced stuff will get the job done. We are dealing with 50+ year old eyes so keep that in mind, BUT except for field of view, I could see no other differences between them. The 32's were a LOT less burdensome to carry. They are my choice in open country now; very handy and if I am leaving anything on the table, my eyes cannot see it! The 280 Remington is overbore. The 7 Rem Mag is over bore. |

A great day pack during use last year, and will be using this year as a weekend hunt backpack. Coleman Peak stove - worked great, a little heavy, but rugged. camo waterproof fishing gloves (for rainy days) - clammy as expected, but not as bad when wearing poly liners underneeth (spelling?) Ruger Mark II in 264 win mag w/boat paddle stock - GREAT. Mountain Hardware 2nd demension bag, haven't tried it in the field yet, but will soon enough. I hear good things. Zeiss Conquest 8x30's - wow! That's all I can think of currently. NH Hunter. It's good to lead - it's better to lead by example. |

Wasn't all that impressed with it, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to pack more than about 40 pounds in/on it. The spotting scope/tripod compartments are nice, but it only has a couple pockets that are big enough to store anything, and the inside pocket is a PITA to get to. I'm pretty sure its going to the classifieds here soon. I got a Mystery Ranch Nice frame for Christmas, and will be outfitting it with a couple diffrnet bags for future hunts. I used a semi custom Pre-64 338-06 to kill an elk and deer this year. Worked just as I expected. Bought a REI quarter dome tent, only spent 3 nights in it so far, but like it. Its light and seems pretty well made. A new MSR Pocket Rocket stove. Works pretty well, but the pot holder 'legs' are kind of flimsy. Its not realy set up to heat much more than maybe a quart of water at the most, a pint would be better. Worked just fine for the amount I needed for cooking. It takes up next to nothing in the pack and weighs about 3 oz. |
