Islam is an Arabic word which means “surrender, submission, commitment and peace.” Thus, Islam can be defined as a path to attain complete peace through voluntary submission to the divine will. Islam means to submit freely to The Commandments and Will of The One and Only God (Allah). This submission should come from within, from sound belief in and conviction to Allah, with no doubt. It should also come from love, trust, and affection. Allah is The Creator of all creatures, including mankind.

The Prophet Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad received The Word of Allah (revelation), through the archangel Gabriel (The Holy Spirit). This revelation comprises the Religion of Islam.

The Qur’an is the authentic collection of this revelation recorded in book form. It is the exact, unchanged Word of Allah to all mankind.

Muslims believe that there is ONLY One supreme God (Allah). In Islam to believe in Allah is not only to believe in Allah’s existence but also to believe in all Allah’s attributions, to worship Allah alone, and to obey all Allah’s commands. Tawheed includes the oneness of the Lordship, oneness of Worship and oneness of Names and Attributes:

A) Oneness of Lordship: To believe that Allah is The ONLY Creator, Provider, and The Commander.

As the sun rises in East, millions of Muslims bow westwards to pay reverence to the holiest of the holy places in Islam, Mecca. Islam is the religion with the second largest number of followers in the world. There are three main branches of Islam, Sunni, Shia and Sufi. The 3 cities mentioned here are considered holy by all the three sects.1. Mecca: It is the holiest city of Islam for Muslims all over the world. It is the city of the holy Kabaa, hosts the black stone that is supposed to be God sent. The Kabaa was built by Ibrahim, the son of Ishmael. The most sacred place in Islam is the Ka’ba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Ka’ba is a mosque (built by Abraham according to Muslim tradition) built around a black stone. The Prophet Muhammad designated Mecca as the holy city of Islam and the direction (qibla) in which all Muslims should offer their prayers. The Masjid-e-Haram is the holiest mosque in all of the Islamic world. There is also the well called Zamzam whose water has therapeutic properties. Your pilgrimage to Mecca is not complete without paying homage to Mount Arafat where the Prophet have his last message to the devoted. Apart from these structural features, Mecca is the holy Islamic city in which the Prophet Mohammed was born and received his enlightenment from the angel Gabriel. The Ka’ba is believed to be the first place that was created on earth and the place at which heavenly bliss and power touches the earth directly. Mecca is located in the Hijaz region of western Saudi Arabia. The city lies inland 73 kilometers east of Jiddah, in the narrow, sandy Valley of Abraham. The Holy City is 277 meters (909 feet) above sea level. The importance of Mecca for Muslims is inestimable. All Muslims, wherever they are on Earth, pray five times a day in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. In addition, a pilgrimage to Mecca is required of every Muslim who can afford it as one of the Five Pillars of the faith.

2. Medina: The second holiest site in Islam is Medina (or Medinah), the “City of the Prophet,” is in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It was to Medina city that Muhammad fled when he was initially driven out of Mecca, and the place where he attracted his first followers. Medina currently has a population of about 600,000 people and is the home of “The Prophet’s Mosque.” This was the adopted city of the Prophet and also the city that holds the honour of having the first truly real mosque built according to Islamic tenets. The Kabaa Mecca existed before the advent of Islam. Mohammed had to flee Mecca as a strong group of of adversaries were planning to attack him. But Medina welcomed him with open arms. It is here that he lived and is buried. The famous Mosque of the Prophet or Masjid-al-Nabawi is built on his house where he rests in peace. It is the seat of power in the hay days of the Islamic empire as the Caliphas presided here. Medina in those times was a divided city. Different clans and religions were eternally quarrelling and bickering and Muhammad brought unity to the city.

3. Jerusalem: Jerusalem is revered because, in Muslim tradition, Muhammad miraculously traveled to Jerusalem by night and ascended from there into heaven. There is something very special about this city. Three major religions namely, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, consider this city as holy. Jerusalem has the Mosque of Al-Aqsa (Arabic name for Jerusalem). It is also the city to which the Prophet travelled on the night of his ascension to heaven. He travelled to Jerusalem from where he received the message of Allah, prayed with the previous prophets and went back to Mecca.

Islam is a religion that provides a complete way of living through its ethical standards and values provided in the Holy Quran. It has described moral values and ethics in a proper way and has emphasized the Muslims to follow them in order to please the Almighty Allah. The Creator of this world and the eternal one has allowed human beings to choose their living style according to their will. The reason behind this freedom is that Allah has described this worldly life as a test in the Holy Quran to earn a reward on the day of judgment according to the deeds.

Islam: Basic Beliefs

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in God and the Last Day and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask; and for the freeing of captives; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which you made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-conscious”.(Quran, 2:177)

How did Islam begin?

Islam is a monotheistic faith centered around belief in the one God (Allah). In this regard, it shares some beliefs with Judaism and Christianity by tracing its history back to the patriarch Abraham, and ultimately to the first prophet, Adam. All the prophets preached the same universal message of belief in one God and kindness to humanity. The last in the series of prophets, according to Muslims, was Muhammad. Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia around 570 CE. He worked first as a shepherd and then as a merchant. He was not happy with the people around him because of superstitions and social and economic injustice. The people were worshipping many gods and had forgotten the message of prophet Abraham to worship one God. Muhammad loved to pray and meditate in the mountains. On one of those occasions, in the year 610 CE, when he was about 40 years old, he received a revelation from God through the angel Jibril (Gabriel). He continued to receive messages from God throughout his life and he began preaching to others what he had learned. His main message is that there was no other God but Allah and that people should lead their lives in a way that was pleasing to Allah.

How many Muslims are there?

Islam spread quickly first throughout Arabia and surrounding countries and then throughout the world. There are 1.2 billion Muslims in the world with 7 million in the United States. Only about 18% of Muslims are Arabs and live in the Middle East. The countries with the largest Muslim populations are Indonesia and India. There are two basic groups of Islam: the Sunnis (about 80% of the world’s Muslims) and the Shi’ites (about 20% of the world’s Muslims). Although they share the same basic beliefs, they disagree on who was the rightful leader of Islam after Muhammad’s death.

What does Islam mean?

Who is Allah (God)?

What do Muslims believe?

Muslims have six major beliefs:

Belief in one God (Allah)

Belief in the Day of Judgment and life after death. The best reward for performing good deeds is getting closer to God.
Belief in divine decree. This means that God is all-powerful and nothing can happen without His permission, however, he has given human beings freedom to choose whether to be good or bad. In the end, everyone will be questioned about how they lived in this life.

What are the Five Pillars of Islam?

These are guides for daily life for putting the beliefs of Muslims into practice:

Shahadah(declaration of faith)—to bear witness or testify that there is no god except one God (Allah) and Muhammad is His prophet or messenger.
Salat(ritual prayer)—the five daily prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and night. The prayers are offered in Arabic language and facing the direction of Mecca.
Zakah(alms tax) –Giving 2.5% of one’s wealth to the poor and needy.
Sawm(fasting)—Muslims fast during the daylight hours in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar called Ramadan. The purpose is to remind people of the goodness of what they have and to show equality with the poor. Ramadan is a time for study and self-discipline.
Hajj(pilgrimage): Muslims believe in making a pilgrimage to Mecca to the Ka’bah at least once in their lifetime. The kA’bah is believed to have been built by Ibrahim (Abraham) and one of his sons. Muhammad restored it to worship Allah. For this reason it is a very sacred place to Muslims.

What is the final revealed scripture (a sacred text) for Muslims?

Muslims believe that the last revealed scripture sent by God is the Qur’an or Koran. It is the speech of God revealed in the Arabic language to Muhammad during his mission of twenty-three years. The Qur’an was written down by scribes and memorized during the lifetime of Muhammad. The Qur’an emphasizes moral, ethical and spiritual values with the aim of establishing justice for everyone. Many Muslims try to learn to read the Koran in its original language, Arabic. It is not uncommon for Muslims to memorize whole chapters of it. They read part of it every day. The Sunnah is a record of Muhammads words and deeds. The Sunnah is used to help interpret the Koran. There is also instruction in it on belief, worship and behavior.

In the Holy Quran, Almighty Allah has mentioned the following values that Muslims must practice in their lifetime.

Almighty Allah is the only one to be worship.
Parents must be dealt with kindness.
Whenever a promise is made it, fulfill it.
The poor and orphans are the responsibility of the society.
Performing the religious duties set by Islam.
Staying away from the deeds that are recommended as sin in Islam.
Dear of Allah should be in the heart of everyone with the truth on the tongue.
Killing a person is like killing the whole of humanity.
Practice honesty in personal and professional life.

Core Islamic Beliefs: Six Articles of Faith

More than a billion Muslims share a common set of fundamental beliefs that are described as “Articles of Faith.” These articles of faith form the foundation of Islamic belief system.

Belief in One God: The most important teaching of Islam is that only God is to be served and worshipped. Also, the biggest sin in Islam is to worship other beings with God. In fact, Muslims believe that it is the only sin that God does not forgive if a person dies before repenting from it.
Belief in Angels: God created unseen beings called angels who work tirelessly to administer His kingdom in full obedience. The angels surround us at all times, each has a duty; some record our words and deeds.
Belief in Prophets of God: Muslims believe that God communicates His guidance through human prophets sent to every nation. These prophets start with Adam and include Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, peace be upon them. The main message of all the prophets has always been that there is only One true God and He alone is worthy of being supplicated to and worshipped.
Belief in Revealed Books of God: Muslims believe that God revealed His wisdom and instructions through ‘books’ to some of the prophets like the Psalms, Torah, and the Gospel. Over time, however, the original teachings of these books got distorted or lost. Muslims believe the Quran is God’s final revelation revealed to Prophet Muhammad and has been fully preserved.
Belief in Day of Judgment: The life of this world and all that is in it will come to an end on an appointed day. At that time, every person will be raised from the dead. God will judge each person individually, according to his faith and his good and bad actions. God will show mercy and fairness in judgment. According to Islamic teachings, those who believe in God and perform good deeds will be eternally rewarded in Heaven. Those who reject faith in God will be eternally punished in the fire of Hell.
Belief in Destiny and Divine Decree: Muslims believe that since God is the Sustainer of all life, nothing happens except by His Will and with His full knowledge. This belief does not contradict the idea of free will. God does not force us, our choices are known to God beforehand because His knowledge is complete. This recognition helps the believer through difficulties and hardships.

Core Religious Practice of Islam: The Five “Pillars” of Islam

In Islam, worship is part of daily life and is not limited to mere rituals. The formal acts of worship are known as the five “pillars” of Islam. The five pillars of Islam are the declaration of faith, prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage.

1)The Testimony of Faith: The testimony of faith is saying with conviction,“La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah.” This saying means“There is no true god (deity) but God (Allah),and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.” The first part, “There is no true god but God,” means that none has the right to be worshipped but God alone, and that God has neither partner nor son. This testimony of faith is called theShahada, a simple formula which should be said with conviction in order to convert to Islam (as explained previously onthis page). The testimony of faith is the most important pillar of Islam.
2)Prayer: Muslims perform five prayers a day. Each prayer does not take more than a few minutes to perform. Prayer in Islam is a direct link between the worshipper and God. There are no intermediaries between God and the worshipper. In prayer, a person feels inner happiness, peace, and comfort, and that God is pleased with him or her. The Prophet Muhammadsaid: {Bilal, call (the people) to prayer, let us be comforted by it.} Bilal was one of Muhammad’scompanions who was charged to call the people to prayers. Prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night. A Muslim may pray almost anywhere, such as in fields, offices, factories, or universities.
3)GivingZakat(Support of the Needy): All things belong to God, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The original meaning of the wordzakatis both ‘purification’ and ‘growth.’ Givingzakatmeans ‘giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain classes of needy people.’ The percentage which is due on gold, silver, and cash funds that have reached the amount of about 85 grams of gold and held in possession for one lunar year is two and a half percent. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a small portion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth. A person may also give as much as he or she pleases as voluntary alms or charity.
4)Fasting the Month of Ramadan: Every year in the month of Ramadan,all Muslims fast from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. Although the fast is beneficial to health, it is regarded principally as a method of spiritual self-purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry, as well as growth in his or her spiritual life.
5)The Pilgrimage to Makkah: The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah is an obligation once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able to perform it. About two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe. Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annualHajjis performed in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. Male pilgrims wear special simple clothes which strip away distinctions of class and culture so that all stand equal before God.

Declaration of Faith: The “Declaration of Faith” is the statement,“La ilaha illa Allah wa MuhammadRasul-ullah”, meaning “There is no deity worthy of being worship except God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God”. The Declaration of Faith is more than just a statement; it must be shown with one’s actions. To convert to the faith of Islam, a person has to say this statement.
Daily Prayer: Prayer is a method by which a Muslim connects to God and gathers spiritual strength and peace of mind. Muslims perform five formal prayers a day.
Zakah: A type of charity. Muslims recognize that all wealth is a blessing from God, and certain responsibilities are required in return. In Islam, it is the duty of the wealthy to help the poor and needy.
Fast ofRamadan: Once each year, Muslims are commanded to fast for an entire month from dawn to sunset. The period of intense spiritual devotion is known as the fast ofRamadanin which no food, drink and sex is allowed during the fast. After sunset one can enjoy these things. During this month Muslims practice self-control and focus on prayers and devotion. During the fast, Muslims learn to sympathize with those in the world who have little to eat.
TheHajjPilgrimage to Mecca: Every Muslim strives to make once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to the sacred sites in Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. It is the most intense spiritual experience for a Muslim. Typically, 2-3 million performhajjevery year.

Core of the Quran:Surah(Chapter)al-Fatihah

Scholars considerSurahal-Fatihah, the first chapter of the Quran, to be the core of the Quran. It is recited in every formal prayer in the Arabic language. The translation follows:

“I begin with the name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.All praise and thanks are for God, the Lord of the worlds. The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the Straight Path (of Islam), the path of those You have blessed, not the path of those who have incurred Your wrath nor of those who have gone astray.”

Core Teachings of Prophet Muhammad

Classical scholars of Islam have condensed the teachings of Prophet Muhammad into a few statements. These comprehensive statements touch every aspect of our lives. Some of them are:

Actions are judged by the intention behind them.
God is Pure and does not accept anything unless it is pure and God has commanded the faithful with what He commanded the prophets.
Part of a person’s good observance of Islam is to leave aside what does not concern him.
A person cannot be a complete believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.
One should not harm himself or others.
Don’t let your focus in this life be to amass worldly gain and God will love you. Don’t be concerned with what people have, and they will love you.

Some contemporary scholars suggest either justice or liberty to be the sixth category.

In the vision of Islam, they are known as “essentials” because they are considered essential to human welfare. In conclude, if someone were to ask, what is the core of Islam in the fewest possible words, the answer would be, “it is within the word Islam itself: to serve, worship, and lovingly submit to God.”

Islam: Celebrations and Festivals

Id ul-Fitr: This festival marks the end of the month of fasting, Ramadan. It ends with the sighting of the new moon in the sky. Muslims visit their mosque to say special prayers, visit friends and relatives, eat special feast foods and exchange gifts and cards. It is a time of thankfulness for Allah’s blessings which are better appreciated because of the experience of fasting during Ramadan.
Hajj: This is the pilgrimage to Mecca to worship in the Ka’bah. Muslims try to do this at least once in their lifetime. Pilgrims wear plain, identical clothes to show that all are equal in Allah’s eyes. They walk around seven times, counterclockwise. They they walk or run seven times between two hills followed by a 16 mile walk to Mount Arafat where Muhammad preached his last sermon. On the way back to Mecca, Muslims throw stones at three stone pillars which represent Satan. Then they make a final seven circles around the kA’bah.
Id ul-Adha: The Hajj, whether on pilgrimage or at home, ends with the festival of Id ul-Adha in which a sheep or goat is sacrificed. This is a reminder of the sacrifice Ibrahim (Abraham) was asked to make of his son, Isma’il (Ishmael). When Ibrahim was just about to sacrifice his son to show his obedience to God, God provided a lamb instead. The festival celebrates God’s mercy and Ibrahim’s obedience. This story in different versions is in the Koran, the Bible, and the Old Testament which shows the common heritage of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Id Ul-Ghadir: This festival in Shia communities around the world celebrates the anniversary of the Holy Prophet Mohammed’s completion of his final message to humankind with regard to his succession. Ghadir-e-Khun is the famous place where this event took place during the month of Hajj in the 10th year of the Hijra, or migration, of the Prophet Mohammed from Mecca to Medina.
Milad an-Nabi (birthday of the Holy Prophet) : Muslims celebrate this occasion with great rejoicing. Muslims gather to narrate the stories of the Prophet’s birth, childhood, his character, manhood and his mission.
Lailat al-Qadr (Night of Power): The night in which the prophet Mohammed received the first revelation from God. The Night of Power is one of the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. A portion of this night is spent reading the Qur’an and making special prayers.
