Budding plant enthusiasts are extending the growing season. Chloe Pitard works in the greenhouse after its roof was modified of For The Inquirer BARBARA JOHNSTON- her Newtown Square home. brought from Japan and pots of pa-perwhites all fill her greenhouse garden benches, reflecting an interest in most anything with leaves. But camellias, which are related to the tea plant, are Pitard's passion. Camellias like it cool, so they thrive in the greenhouse and do not object to its easterly exposure, said Pitard.
The winter temperature in the greenhouse ranges between 45 and 60 degrees. The greenhouse does have a thermostat and gas heater, Pitard added, and she can mechanically open and close its glass vents. It also is equipped with running water. In the summer, she moves her plants outdoors. The key to building the right greenhouse is identifying what you want to grow and designing the structure around that objective.

Chimneys and second-story windows are two architectural features that sometimes get in the way. In the case of the Pitard home, the first problem that had to be addressed was the low eave on the back of the garage where the greenhouse was to be constructed, LaRouche noted. To solve the problem, the Pitards built a higher false roof on the garage, creating a higher eave from which to extend the greenhouse.
